What you’ll see
The gold Lord Murugan statue stands at the foot of the staircase, and the 272 painted steps behind it lead up into the limestone cathedral cave.
Inside the main cave there are shrines, natural skylights and, usually, a great many macaques, keep food out of sight and bags closed.
This is a working temple, so shoulders and knees need to be covered. Sarongs are available at the entrance if you arrive without one.
It is a half-day trip from Kuala Lumpur and pairs easily with a city tour in the morning or with Kuala Selangor for fireflies in the evening.

- This is a working temple. Shoulders and knees must be covered; sarongs are available at the entrance if you arrive without one.
- 272 steps
- The staircase to the Cathedral Cave is steep with no lift. There is plenty to see at ground level if the climb is not for you.
- Macaques
- Long-tailed macaques live on the steps. Keep food out of sight, close your bags, and do not feed or approach them.
- Thaipusam
- The Thaipusam festival in January or February draws enormous crowds. It is remarkable, but plan for very slow going.
