What you’ll see
The Perhentians are two islands off Besut. Besar is the quieter, more family-oriented one; Kecil is where the budget chalets and the backpackers are.
Island hopping is the main activity, a long-tail boat runs you between snorkelling points, the turtle beach, the shipwreck site and Romantic Beach.
There are no cars, limited electricity hours at some chalets and no ATMs, so bring cash and low expectations of Wi-Fi. That is rather the appeal.
Like Redang, the islands close over the east-coast monsoon, so ask us which months are open before you book flights or leave.

- Like Redang, the Perhentians shut over the north-east monsoon, roughly November to February or early March. Check the open dates with us first.
- Bring cash
- There are no ATMs on either island and card acceptance is patchy. Bring enough ringgit for the whole stay.
- Besar or Kecil
- Besar is quieter and more family-oriented. Kecil has the budget chalets and the backpacker crowd. They are a short boat ride apart.
- No cars
- You get around on foot or by long-tail boat. Some chalets run generators for limited hours, so expect the power to go off.
