What you’ll see
This is an evening trip. Kuala Selangor is about an hour and a half north-west of KL, and we time the run so you reach the river after dark.
The fireflies gather in the berembang trees along the riverbank and you go out in a small boat with no lights. Photographs do not work, so put the phone away and just watch.
Before that there is Bukit Melawati with its old fort, the lighthouse and the silver-leaf monkeys, and the sunset over the Strait from the hilltop.
Pasir Penambang across the bridge is where we stop for seafood before the boats go out.

Good to know
- It is an evening trip
- The fireflies only show after dark, so the run is timed to reach the river in the evening rather than the morning.
- No photographs
- The boats go out without lights and the fireflies do not photograph. Phones and flashes spoil it for everyone; put them away and watch.
- Fireflies
- The Selangor river colonies are Pteroptyx tener, which gather in the berembang trees along the banks. They are brightest on dark, still, moonless nights.

- The hilltop has the old fort, the Altingsburg lighthouse and silver-leaf monkeys. Do not hand-feed them.
